Tom Powers was a legend among my friends
at Michigan State. We had seen him perform
with his band a number of times in the Detroit
Metropolitan area. As a jazz pianist, singer,
and songwriter, he is as good as it gets.
When my best friend Ron Lippert and I went
to see him perform on September 3, 1982,
he was doing a solo gig. Ron almost choked
on his drink when I said I was going to
ask Tom if he would record some of my songs.
"Hey, it's my 37th birthday!"
I exclaimed. "What have I got to lose?"
During the next two years, he recorded 17
songs for me on my Teac-4-track tape recorder
before he moved to Arizona. Right now he
still plays the piano and sings for a living
in the Phoenix area. As unbelievably talented
as Tom Powers is, I find it sad that people
don't get to hear him perform on a national
level. I feel incredibly blessed to have
Tom as a good friend and equally as honored
to have some of my songs performed by him.
